One Piece has amassed a large collection of movies over the decades, and here’s each of them in order of release date. Some were originally short films presented as double features with other Toei Animation films at their film festivals, but most have been fully theatrical in terms of both length and release. Whatever the case, the wide assortment of films is a testament to how big of a franchise One Piece has managed to become.

There are few anime with as many films as One Piece. It should be noted that at the time of writing, many of the films on this list have yet to be released outside of Japan, so there are no legal means of viewing most of them in the West. However, every One Piece movie from 2007 onward, save for two movies in particular, can either be purchased from various websites or streamed on Crunchyroll and Netflix, so there are at least some films that can be viewed through less piratey means.

One Piece Film: Red Blu-ray Review - A True Spectacle Comes Home

One Piece Film: Red dazzled fans with its stunning visuals and heartfelt story back in 2022, and now the Blu-ray brings that magic home.

The list includes all One Piece movies that have been released in movie theaters, and not the TV specials that have aired along with Toei's anime. Many early films are not available for streaming but can be purchased via physical media.

1 One Piece: Defeat The Pirate Ganzack! Was Animated Before The Beloved Anime

OVA Release Date: 1998, Directed By: Goro Taniguchi (Code Geass, Space Dandy)

The first One Piece movie was the 1998 OVA One Piece: Defeat the Pirate Ganzack! The movie was made by Production I.G. a year before One Piece was picked up by Toei Animation, so in addition to having a different art style, Luffy, Zoro, and Nami all had different voice actors from the anime. In another bit of trivia, the movie was the directorial debut of Goro Taniguchi of Code Geass fame, and decades later, he would return to direct the franchise's latest film, One Piece Film: Red.

The first One Piece film to be made by Toei Animation was released in 2000, and it was appropriately titled One Piece: The Movie. This was nebulously set sometime after Usopp joined the crew, with Sanji only being referenced in the film's end credits. Its plot revolved around the Straw Hats racing against the pirate Eldoraggo to find the hidden treasure of the legendary Woonan. This was the only One Piece production by Toei Animation to use hand-drawn cel animation, as every other production, both before and after the film, would use digital techniques.

When their attempts to find it lead to Nami being kidnapped, the Straw Hats team up with a pair of thieves and travel to Clockwork Island to defeat her kidnappers, the Trump Pirates, and free the island's inhabitants from their tyranny. Clockwork Island Adventure grossed approximately ¥3 billion at the box office. Before One Piece Film: Strong World, it was the highest-grossing film in the franchise.

4 Chopper’s Kingdom On The Island Of Strange Animals Gives The Doctor His Own Movie

Movie Release Date: 2002, Director: Junji Shimizu (Slam Dunk, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Zatch Bell)

By 2002, Chopper had solidified himself as the franchise’s mascot, and going right along with that, he received his own movie in the same year titled Chopper’s Kingdom on the Island of Strange Animals. The film centers around Chopper being stranded on an island of talking animals who mistakenly believe he was chosen to be their king. While Chopper initially wanted no part of that, he ultimately stepped up to stop Count Battler from stealing the island’s golden horns.

None of the franchise's films are 100% canon, although some of the movies do provide information that helps build upon One Piece's world. Still, Chopper's Kingdom On The Island Of Strange Animals was explicitly non-canon to One Piece's overarching story due to Vivi's absence, even though she appeared before Chopper and the Baroque Works saga had yet to end.

5 Dead End Adventure Was One Piece's First Big Movie

Movie Release Date: 2003, Directed By: Kônosuke Uda (Pluto, Banana Fish, Sailor Moon)

One Piece Dead End Adventure was the first full theatrical film instead of a double feature. The film centered around the Straw Hat Pirates entering the Dead End Race, a pirate boat race with an obscenely large cash prize. They soon find themselves wrapped up in the conflict between a powerful former Marine, now cheating pirate, Gasparde, and the bounty hunter, Shuraiya, who was trying to kill him.

The fourth One Piece movie is notable for using revolutionary animation techniques and having some intense action similar to Luffy's battle against Crocodile. Dead End Adventure's villain, General Gasparde, holds the powers of an intimidating Logia Devil Fruit that allows him to turn into Liquid Candy and use it to transform his body into any weapon. Interestingly, this and the next movie are the only ones referenced in the anime. Drake, who appeared in both movies, recounted meeting the Straw Hats twice in the G-8 filler arc.

6 The Cursed Holy Sword Nearly Split The Straw Hat Crew Apart

Movie Release Date: 2004, Directed By: Kazuhisa Takenouchi (Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Daft Punk Music Videos)

In The Cursed Holy Sword, Zoro suddenly betrays the Straw Hat Pirates to work for Saga, his childhood friend who wields the titular cursed holy sword, so Luffy and everyone have to work together to both stop Saga from unleashing the full power of his sword and figure out the reason behind Zoro's betrayal. Interestingly, One Piece: The Cursed Holy Sword features some of the most graphic animation in all of One Piece, with how detailed and brutal Saga's slaughter of pirates in the film's opening is.

7 Baron Omatsuri And The Secret Island Is A One Piece Horror Movie

Movie Release Date: 2005, Directed By: Mamoru Hosoda (Digimon: The Movie, Samurai Champloo, Wolf Children)

One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island is easily one of the more famous movies of the bunch. In addition to having a completely different art style, thanks to being directed by Mamoru Hosoda of Belle and Digimon Adventure: Our War Game! fame, the story of the Straw Hats going to a mysterious island for a vacation slowly unravels into something more aligned with a horror film than a typical One Piece adventure.

The horrific tale serves to deconstruct all of One Piece's typical conventions. Baron Omatsuri is one of the franchise's darkest and most unique stories where The Straw Hat's relationships become frayed in an unsettling fashion thanks to effective writing and direction that sees its visuals and story get darker and darker until the film's haunting final act. Its effective and radical departure from expectations makes it a must-see for hardcore fans of the franchise. Of all the movies, One Piece's sixth film is regarded as one of the best by fans and critics almost twenty years after its release.

8 The Giant Mecha Soldier of Karakuri Castle Teases Gear 2 Before The Anime

Movie Release Date: 2006, Directed By: Kônosuke Uda (Pluto, Banana Fish, Sailor Moon)

✕ Remove Ads

Movie seven, "The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle," sees the Straw Hat Pirates go to Mecha Island. The island is filled with robots and other mechanical contraptions in search of treasure, and doing so puts them in conflict with its tyrannical manchild of a leader, Ratchet. Due to Chopper's voice actress Ikue Otani being on maternity leave at the time, Karakuri Castle is the only movie to feature Chopper but not Otani, with Chopper instead being voiced by Kazue Ikura, who's best known for voicing City Hunter's Kaori Makimura.

The villain of the seventh One Piece movie, Dr. Ratchet was a foe who was hard to take seriously because many of his scenes are played off as comedic gags. However, the film takes place before the beloved Water 7 arc and featured Luffy using Gear 2 for the very first time. The Giant Mecha Soldier of Karakuri Castle wouldn't be the first time to introduce new Luffy techniques before the anime.

9 The Desert Princess And The Pirates: Adventures In Alabasta Summarizes The Arc

Movie Release Date: 2007, Directed By: Takahiro Imamura (Dragon Ball Z Movies, Digimon)

One Piece Movie: The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta is one of the more notable films in the catalog. The film is just a compilation film abridging the Alabasta arc of the story, so it has much less to offer than other films in terms of story. However, Adventures in Alabasta was the first One Piece project to be dubbed by Funimation after 4Kids Entertainment lost the rights to the series. It was the first chance for Western fans to hear the talented English cast that's continued to dub One Piece for years.

Movie Release Date: 2008, Directed By: Junji Shimizu (Slam Dunk, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Zatch Bell)

Episode of Chopper was another compilation film, this time chronicling Chopper's debut, but with a twist. The ninth One Piece movie added various original elements to Chopper's backstory, such as giving Wapol a brother named Musshuru and including Robin, Franky, and the Thousand Sunny. Luffy's battle against Musshuru is one of the series' best fights with incredibly fluid animation. In 2014, a special edition of the movie was released to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the anime with new scenes, most notably a new ending that rationalized the changes by making it all a dream Chopper was having.

Its plot centered around Luffy and the Straw Hats fighting Golden Lion Shiki, an old rival of Roger’s, as he attempted to carry out a plot to destroy the entire East Blue. 16 Stampede Hosts A Collection Of One Piece Characters Against A Rogue Roger Pirate

Movie Release Date: 2019, Directed By: Takashi Ôtsuka (Haikyu!!, Digimon, One Piece Anime)

With One Piece: Stampede was released along with the anime's 20th anniversary, so nearly every named character in the franchise was brought together in the movie to compete for Roger's lost treasure at the Pirates Festival. Luffy ends up having to defend his entire generation of pirates from Douglas Bullet, a deadly pirate said to be Roger's rival, aiming to destroy everyone in the world to declare himself the strongest. Stampede is notable for revealing that the final island was meant to be translated as Laugh Tale, not Raftel, four months before that would be confirmed in the manga.

There is a lot of Stampede's plot that begins to fall apart if too much thought is put into it but the end result is an incredibly stylish and entertaining movie filled with more action then compelling plot. Worst Generation Pirates, Warlords of the Sea, and even some notable Marine's appear for either some effective comedy or epic action scenes. Fans more interested in the anime's over-the-top action scenes should not miss One Piece: Stampede.
